The Importance Of A Justice System Intervention Essay

Data collected at the national level provide reports that show 1 in 5 women being victims of severe physical violence in their lifetime (NISVS, 2010).We must ask ourselves if enough is being done to prevent this. From a historical point, there has almost always been a distinction from men on woman violence. Based on the disparity of cases reported, male inflicted violence on females is much higher and prevalent. When the perpetrators of DV, and IPV are predominately males, we can no longer dismissed this issue as a cultural, or psychological lapse in judgment. Currently the state of California requires all domestic violence offenders to take court order classes as a form of reprimand and in part to educate offenders. It is important to understand that a justice system intervention can sometimes fall short and failed to address the root of the problem. An important step in preventing domestic violence is the promotion of respectful, nonviolent relationships through individual, relationship, community, and societal level change (Prevent Domestic Violence in Your Community, 2015). As social workers become proactive by familiarizing themselves with all the DV policies, services and laws (Messing, Ward-Lasher, Bagwell-Gray, 2015) they have the potential to be the primary agents to advocate for a change in policy that address a problem before it begins.
